    25:45 Rick, how do you feel about disclosing that the level of commission received is not from the client but that because it is from the carrier, it has a bearing on the guarantees that the carrier builds into a given product and therefore that the client receives?

    Ramsay talks about high withdrawal rates in the context of having a paid off house - leaving that out is a bit disingenuous and changes the calculus substantially. Loved the discussion about behavioral vs economic outcomes of annuities - it's something I've considered a lot. Thanks

    • @jpg7616
      @jpg7616 3 месяца назад

      No it doesn’t. Having a paid for home won’t help a portfolio survive a major bear market + 8% withdrawals. You’ll just get to stay in your home when you run out money and have to live on only SSI for the rest of your life.

    What i can never figure out is Dave likes to talk about 12% annual returns on average but thats equities not bonds and as u get close to retirement age no sane financial advisor is telling u to be 100% in equities or even 50% in equities because of the risk so his math of 12% return less an 8% draw leaving enough to account for inflation always seems bogus to me.

  • @sdsconstruction
    @sdsconstruction 3 месяца назад

    Gentlemen and professors of ACFS. Question: If you are concerned with Dave Ramsey's math producing a misconception, have you ever called in to his show and asked him about why a basis of 8% spending vs 4%? It may be enlightening for both sides. In the end, if i am someone who is savy enough to be actively investing for retirement then I am someone who is likely not going to take 100% of anyone's advice especially if it a person on a talk show. As you know, Ramsey' basic premise (baby steps to financial success) is to 1) save $1g as a mini emergency fund, 2) debt snowball all debts except the house from small to large 3) once debt free (except the house) complete the emergency fund, 3 to 6 months expenses in the bank 4) invest approx 15% gross income into retirement 5) save for childrens college 6) pay off the house as agressively as you can 7) debt free with a paid off house, retirement savings underway, college being taken care of, continue to build wealth and be very charitable This is, in my opinion, incontrovertable good advice for 90% of all united states citizens. Beyond that, most adults would understand that it is a talk show for entertainment purposes only (since they can not give legally binding financial advice) hosted by a successful author who has made most of his hundreds of millions of dollars selling books and investing in real estate. Give him a call. See what his logic is. Leave challenge and emotion out of the discussion and it might be an enlightening discussion! I (maybe like you?) would be interested in his methodology in how he arrives at his recommended percentages for investments and spending where retirement is concerned. You believe the values are inflated 2x. Why does he believe they are 1x? Very intereting podcast! Thanks gentlemen. Best of luck going forward.

    No one should be relying on market as their only retirement vehicle, that's not a good plan. You should have a multi stream approach of at least 3 source if possible. If you do, you can bypass most market volatility by redirecting to other source and not relying on the market exclusively. Retirement planning is personal and complex, there is no one size fits all.

  • @leemcfarland4769
    @leemcfarland4769 3 месяца назад

    The 4% rule is from a million simulations using past market returns that 95% of retirees that only take 4% out every year will still have money when they die. In that simulation, half of all retirees were millionaires. 4% is way way to safe.

    Thank you for this discussion. One of my issues with so many retirement planning discussions (at least the free, online stuff) is that they always use fixed withdrawals/spending. Incorporating guardrails and flexibility during retirement seems to be the best way...I'd guess that in reality, this happens anyway for most retirees, so it makes sense to try to incorporate that in the planning.

    Here’s the thing. I took an anthropology course years ago and became aware of the fact that different cultures approach money and finance in different ways. As a cook in our culture making little money with people from all walks of life who have seen use their incomes differently. Some people like me because I learned how to ‘win’ finance from my parents. Others just live pay cheque to paycheque (and they’re not even the people that can get into tonnes of consumer debt). It is like there is two separate cultures in terms of approach to finance within our own. Sure, 12% return is ridiculous but if you don’t understand anything about saving and compound interest and getting out of debt, he is probably doing good over all.

    I'm a retired fed since 2021 follower of Dr. Wade Pfau and David Blanchett's research about retirement income planning and de-risking your portfolio. I walked into retirement with a nice pension, 50/50 TSP, Roths and taxable bonds and stocks and postponing SS until age 70. After eyewitnessesing the slaughtering of bonds in 2021 just after the recovery of the stocks and the war in Ukraine, I went into safety 1st mode locking in supplemental income for 5yrs with a SPIA. No regrets! Those chips are off the market enabling me to travel, pursue Roth conversions and to continue re-structuring my portfolio. So I'm certainly part of the echo chamber tips in this podcast. And I agree retirees need to shift their investment decision framework away from accumulation to income generation and tax location (not discussed in your discussion). Thank you all for your valuable insights, very timely and helpful academic work. It is gold in the age of uncertainty and turmoil. Kudos! .... 🤔📚📊😎🖖

    Glad I already earned mine. I prefer to just pass the exam rather than doing all the other stuff. Considering that I only earned a 'C' grade in most of them, that was enough. Today, if I were to re-take those courses, the exam would lower my ability to pass, depending on the other assignments. Not sure if this is good for working and producing professionals.
